After about 6 years instructing my son, Ronnie, on guitar, I do not simply view Mel as an instructor but as a family friend. Mel has helped my 17 year old become an absolutely awesome and well-rounded musician...something I will forever be thankful for. My son's skills go so far beyond what most people would assume of a teenager after 6 short years, that I understand just how lucky we were to find Mel.
The teacher is EVERYTHING in music! True, Ronnie has natural talent but without Mel, it would have gone nowhere. I know how important the teacher is, as I was a piano major in college.
Mel is easy going, energetic, inspiring, and one of the finest musician/teachers anywhere around. I still don't understand how Union, Missouri got so lucky! The last couple years, Mel has been teaching Ronnie scales, modes, and how music is actually put together, so Ronnie can really improvise.
The other thing Mel has taught Ronnie to do so well is to figure out music without needing sheet music, by ear...something I never taught to do when I was young. I call my Ronnie MY Carlos Santana. We feel blessed to have Mel in our lives.
