As a young violin student at Juilliard, Toby Perlman imagined an antidote to the competitive and isolating environment that exceptional young artists often grapple with in the pursuit of their craft. In the summer of 1994, along with her husband Itzhak, Toby established The Perlman Music Program for aspiring young violinists, violists, cellists, bassists, and pianists.
This year, like so many of us in an upside-down world, we didn't go ANYWHERE. There was, of course, one exception: we emerged from quarantine exclusively to be back at camp. Our return to Shelter Island and our PMP family this summer was the highlight of our year. It was pure, life-affirming joy and the direct result of our community's unwavering commitment to our terrific students, their needs, and their safety.
PMP's mission to educate and connect brings students far beyond the Shelter Island campus. Travel Residencies take the PMP curriculum on the road, energizing local audiences while providing a welcome opportunity for alumni and students to reunite. The program will bring together Israeli and Summer Music School students for lessons, studio classes, virtual gatherings, and special projects. Faculty members include Kirsten Docter, Clara Kim, Sean Lee, Li Lin, Itzhak Perlman, Merry Peckham, Zvi Plesser, and Carol Rodland.
Any violinists, violists, cellists and pianists, and ensembles, over the age of 18 interested in an immersive chamber music experience under the guidance of world-class artist-faculty in an idyllic setting during the early summer of 2022, please consider applying in the Fall of 2021. Submit up to four (4) video samples in your application, plus an excerpt (or two full works for ensembles).
