As a teacher, I've been advocating for my own brand of "musical individualism" here in New York City for over a decade. I founded my private teaching studio on the idea that individual self-expression is a core human pursuit. I've always been frustrated that even our best educational systems simply teach us how to color between the lines. I offer a compelling approach to learning from scratch, or improving your existing musical skills. My song-based approach gets you playing on a functional level, so you can set your sights on more expressive pursuits.
Services
Chris Conly offers private music instruction on a variety of fretted instruments like Acoustic + Electric Guitar, 5 String Banjo, Tenor Banjo, Ukulele, and Mandolin. But we are not living in normal times. So at the moment, I work exclusively over video platforms like Google Hangouts Meet, Apple FaceTime, and Zoom.

Highly recommend! I began in-person lessons for Guitar with Chris in February 2020. Not long after that, the pandemic hit and virtual lessons became essential. I was a little skeptical (or just bummed) about taking virtual guitar lessons, but soon enough, Chris and I found our stride and he began guiding me as I started to compose entire songs. He'd listen to my progress each week and make well informed suggestions about what he heard and how the song could progress in the best ways.
During that time, I learned a great amount about my own playing and self expression. When my songwriting inspiration dried up a bit, we moved back to some technique work and we covered some finger-style numbers, theory, ear-training, memorization and how to re-phrase solos and melodies. Chris even helped me prepare for a band audition which I nailed! In the year I worked with Chris, we covered a lot of ground and he helped me become a much more well rounded guitarist.

I really recommend Chris as a guitar teacher. I've played for a long time but wanted some accountability and rigor to progress my skill level after it had languished for a few years. Chris helped me wrap my head around some of the more theory-based concepts that I wasn't picking up on my own and framed the lessons around engaging and popular tunes. A really great experience with a warm, friendly and knowledgeable instructor.

I've been taking Banjo lessons with Chris -- it's my first time with a fretted instrument and I am not otherwise musically inclined -- but Chris has been an extraordinarily enthusiastic and patient teacher and has a teaching style which is a good mix of practical knowledge and understanding how the banjo works.

Chris has gone above and beyond in helping me find and work out banjo arrangements for the kind of older, more obscure songs that I was interested in. He is easy to work with, patient, and clear in his direction and lessons. His scheduling system also has made it easy for me to plan and reschedule lessons when necessary. Last but not least, we laugh and have fun. Highly recommended teacher.

I've been working with Chris for coming on three years. He's insanely talented (very patient) and an all around great guy and teacher. He's been able to offer me all sorts of practical and theoretic knowledge, but also always letting me drive the direction and pace of the lessons. He shown me some great music and helped me figure out how to play many of my personal favorite tunes. Can't recommend him enough if you're looking for a teacher. I happen to play ukulele, but I've seen who's skills on guitar and banjo as well!
