How & What I Teach
My first teacher taught me to play by ear, and I've always been grateful for that approach. It got me playing real songs quickly, and over time it developed my ear so that I can listen to a song and figure out how to play it. That's my approach to teaching as well.
What do you want to do with music? Rhythm and fingerpicking are my main focus, as well as teaching students to play by ear. If you're a singer or singer/songwriter who wants to accompany yourself on guitar or play music with other people, I can get you there pretty quickly, if you spend time with the instrument. I love to work with students on songs they want to learn, so please make a list of the artists you like to listen to. I'll find songs by those artists, learn them & teach them to you alongside the playing basics.
I can help you learn several genres of music, including pop, rock, country, worship, alternative, etc., but there are other teachers you should check out if your main interest is lead soloing or metal shredding. Other teachers are also a better choice if your main focus is classical guitar or intensive jazz. If you need thorough preparation for Greenville Fine Arts Center or Governor's School auditions or intend to pursue a college degree in music, Watson Wood Music can give you that. Excellent teachers, great people, and a stellar reputation earned over many years.
