With the brasses we teach the Herbert L Clarke - Claude Gordon System of brass teaching. This is the finest system in the world and both Dr Gordon and his top protege Carl Leach have been on the faculty at Kurt Heisig Music.
We opened in 1968 in San Jose and then had two stores in Saratoga and Santa Cruz for almost 30 years, before moving to Pacific Grove and Monterey. Our owner is a master craftsman, soloist, conductor and teacher with students playing worldwide. Our goals have always been to provide the finest in instruments, mouthpieces, reeds, teaching, repairs and accessories. We have always been performance oriented and have many fine performance groups associated with our stores. We have always been teaching oriented.
We will add things from time to time, and since many of them are important musical events, you may find it worthwhile reading. It will be periodically updated. It may be long, rambling and disjunct, but after 50 years in business we have seen and made some history in music. Some will be delighted to find nuggets here.
These have been compared very favorably against the popular 4 and 5 thousand dollar horns. The standard HEISIG flute is the model that we sell the most of and has been outplaying flutes that sell for 3 -4,000 thousand dollars. We feel that this sax will more than compare favorably to any modern horn and will sit in a section with THE VINTAGE BIG NAME HORN AND MODEL and do very well.
At our company, we carry unique products from local designers at affordable prices. We promise you will be pleased with the high quality of our items, each one is made with great care and a strong attention to detail.
We started selling trumpets in 1968. I soon became the youngest Benge Agent in the world and we added Schilke to the line. It was very heady for a young man to frequently talk to and work with the retired First Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony, Renold Schilke! The next good horn was the Claude Gordon model of the Benge.

Kurt has worked on my saxophones for over 25 years - he never ceases to amaze. Every time he touches a horn, it plays better. He's fun to talk to and he's a master repair tech - a national treasure in my opinion.

Took my trumpet in; the horn was in at a terrible dented and twisted condition, and Kurt was able to fix it without breaking it, almost nearly by hand. Affordable. The man knows music and instruments.

For woodwinds, flutes and brass he is the guy to go to. He knows how to make small changes that drastically improve the instrument and make it easier on the musician. He carries high quality reeds and knows how to adjust them so that you don't have to search for a good reed out of the box. You start with a good quality reed and then geek it and make small adjustments to make it a great reed. No waste. Other technicians are painting by numbers and delivering disappointing results; while he is an artist trying to find people to pass on some of his more than half a century of experience and learning. Like most artists he is a bit temperamental so if you are too sensitive or don't have a little time to spend you probably won't appreciate the education. If you are secure enough you can get a lot of value.

Kurt is incredible! I called Kurt to check out a new instrument I'd purchased on Ebay based on other reviews and his history with other esteemed musicians like Steve Adelstein and Claude Gordon, and I can't put into words how happy I am that I did! Kurt knows his stuff, and makes whatever is currently existing BETTER. After meeting with him and looking over my newly purchased instrument, I decided to leave my older (yet loved!) instrument with Kurt to "freshen up" as well.

He understands the instrument more than modern makers and corrected an ongoing issue other specialists couldn't. He gets the physics involved in the instrument - it's insane! I also decided to take lessons with Kurt, since I'd played for a little over 20 years, but felt like I had plateaued. My first lesson was eye-opening. In the first two measures, he'd stopped me with suggestions on interpretation I'd never been able to think of on my own. Kurt doesn't just teach how to play music, but how to interpret and portray music to an audience.

He has completely lived up to my expectations, blown me away, and more! Lastly, Kurt's pricing is old school in the best possible way. My "half-hour" lesson is really the time it takes - some weeks, an hour; other weeks, two and a half hours. Kurt cares about supporting up and coming musicians with the lessons of accomplished musicians. I not only get his guidance, but the guidance of those astounding musicians Kurt has had the honor and pleasure of working with. I am forever grateful for his knowledge and experience! Thank you, Kurt!

I just walked in and was welcomed by Kurt, would love to spend more time and a few drinks w this gentleman. He's very intelligent on making instruments play their best and adapting them to do so.

We brought our son's alto to Kurt to fix the octave key. Not only did Kurt fix it, he gave the horn a huge tune-up, and at a fair price. Kurt's a true master at his craft.

Kurt Heisig Music: I was teaching a lesson and despite 6 times asking the girl to come back the next day, she would not leave. She kept trying to argue with me and challenge and twist everything I said. No matter how many times I asked her to come back when I wasn't teaching she kept interfering with the lesson.

My daughters just went to the store to buy valve oil for their brother and he wanted to know what instruments they played, my oldest said, "flute, " and he proceeded to say how he's the only professional flute maker in the world and they were confused why he was talking about that and he brought out a book to prove who the best musicians are and said there aren't any good ones in LA.

My other daughter said she didn't think that was a nice statement and the book he showed her has musicians from LA and he screamed at her and said "Nobody calls me a liar! Spiked brat! Get out and never come here again!" All this because they wanted valve oil?! What on earth?! He sounds very unhinged. My daughter called the police.

We loved this shop. The owner was very helpful and knowledgeable about many kinds of music. An accomplished flutist, he also gave our daughter a tutorial lesson on the flute. We bought our daughter's latest flute from this shop.

The best technician I've met to date. I drove all the way down from the East Bay to see him for some custom reeds. As far as Im concerned, I've never played a batch of reeds until meeting Kurt. He'll cut them and work with you on every reed from any vintage in his stock until it each one absolutely SINGS. He has a lifetime worth of knowledge and experience. Get your sound you've always wanted with Kurt!

Nestled off of Alvarado St. in Monterey is Kurt Heisig's shop. I was in Monterey for my wedding. I typically bring my saxophone on vacation because I love playing it in random places to bring live music to people. I went to a music store down the street from Kurt's shop to buy some reeds and I was disappointed with the quality of items they had for a saxophones.

I happened to be walking past Kurt's shop on my way back to my car. He wasn't at the shop but he left his phone number on the door. I called him and I believe it was one of the best decisions i will ever make in regards to becoming a better musician. It is rare to find a saxophone specialist such as Kurt. i spent most of my free time before my wedding soaking in all the knowledge of Kurt musically and in life.

He is a man of plenty of stories. I enjoyed Kurt's company and I hope he enjoyed mine. I came to the shop to buy reeds and I was able to watch him make a custom made mouthpiece to my playing style and reeds that I use. I will be taking lessons with him and I would recommend any woodwind player to visit Kurt.

My experience with Kurt was brief but very important. I happened by his shop in Santa Cruz years ago and walked in to browse just before closing. Kurt was interesting/very engaging to talk with. I hadn't played trumpet in years, and mentioned something about some difficulties I had while playing - mind you, I'd played for many years previously, but never developed beyond a certain point. Kurt listened to me and told me his opinion of my approach, and another way to look at the issues I had. Additionally, Kurt made me aware of Claude Gordon, his method, theories, and equipment. and esp. the book Mr. Gordon wrote, "Brass Playing is No Harder than Deep Breathing" That is about 23 years ago, and Kurt's advice that evening, and insistence that I read Claude's book, changed my playing, and has allowed me to progress enormously over the many years.

No one, until Kurt, including a previous well known brass instructor during my high school years, had given me anywhere near the basic understanding of how to approach the instrument, and tools to initiate my development. I owe Kurt a great Thank You.

Wow! Monterey, are you EVER lucky to have Heisig Music! I am a music teacher formerly from Santa Cruz (now in WA State). Kurt rubs shoulders with people who SOLO with major symphonies. Steve Adelstein is perhaps the finest oboe player of all time, major symphony soloist, auditioned the Fullbright Scholars, Professor Emeritus of Berkeley College of Music, etc. Well, Steve called Kurt, "The greatest music teacher in the America, perhaps the world." Kurt had my fifth grade students playing college-level etudes!

After only a few weeks on the clarinet, one of my college band mates called me 'amazing!' Kurt's instruments and lessons are a bit more pricey (not much), but he is entirely worth it!

We are new to the area and needed to get my daughters flute adjusted/ tuned and also my nephews alto sax. knowing little about instruments myself and reading so many bad reviews I made a call to Kurt who came up on a search for teaching with excellent reviews! I brought our flute and sax in and he really is amazing! so much knowledge, even gave teaching advice throughout the process, when he was done with my daughters flute she stated even brand new it didn't play this good! Sax sounds beautiful and the adjustment was in a snap! Thank you again Kurt~ truly a professional and knowledgeable person. We will be coming here for all our instrument needs and lessons if needed!

Just on plain curiosity, I stopped into Kurt's new shop in PG. He is a very nice guy, and so are his assistants. I don't play, or know the first thing about music. Kurt was very welcoming and showed me and my father the instruments he makes and repairs, inspite of our own brass deficiency. He's got a full selection of sheet music too, and does instruction. A real gem of a small business of downtown, and I hope he's going to do well here.

Kurt is a consumate performing musician and woodwind instrument teacher, manufacturer and repair specialist. He also is a fine brass instrument teacher and his knowlege and teaching techniques have helped me immensely since I picked up my horn several years ago, not having played since College. He can remove dents and repair other damage quickly and fine tune your instrument to a level that you probably did not think possible. Kurt loves what he does and is willing to share his knowlege with all levels of students. Musicians looking for good value horns and mouthpieces that will allow them to achieve superior sound should check out Kurt's store.

If you're a brass or woodwind player, Kurt Heisig is the guy you want to see. He has a reasonable selection of instruments for sale, including a variety of under his own label. He's a professional mouthpiece maker (for saxes), and while expensive (they're hand made) they're very, very worth it. He does instrument repair, and can likely make your horn sound better than it ever has. He's also a great instructor, and the list of people he's taught will shock and awe you. Seriously.

Shock and awe. He's also just a fantastic guy to talk to (though he'll talk your ear off if you give him half a chance), having been pretty much everywhere in the industry and met pretty much everyone. Beware that he's a total salesman, but he knows what he's talking about, so if you've got the $$, what he's selling is probably worth buying.
