My aim is to provide quality guitar instruction in Chicago to students of all levels. As a guitar teacher, I can help you move beyond your current playing level or to begin playing with effective methods I've developed through years of experience teaching guitar lessons and working with many students.

Because learning music is most successful and fun when a student is pursuing a goal that they find interesting, I'm happy to work with you to design a custom plan for your guitar lessons that will help you to achieve your goals. No matter what the topic, my teaching emphasizes the skills and knowledge that will give you a thorough understanding of the guitar and allow you to use what you learn in your guitar lessons to actually play music.

Here are some examples of subjects we will cover in your guitar lessons. With each of these topics, we'll begin at a level that's appropriate for you. Whether you have a lot of guitar experience, or are just beginning, I can help.

I will work with you to turn all topics that we cover into functional skills that you can use to actually make music. We'll accomplish this by playing together frequently and working through exercises and songs.

Chords We will progress through all chord families, giving you a thorough understanding of essential guitar chords.
Improvisation You will learn to use scales, arpeggios, and other common soloing devices to build or advance your soloing ability.
Technique We'll use exercises to develop and consistently improve your right and left hand technique.
Music Theory As we progress, I will teach you the theory behind the music so that you understand how the techniques you are learning work.
Reading You will become skilled at reading standard music notation.

Roger Panella

Roger Panella has over 6 years of experience as a professional guitar instructor, teaching at both community music schools and lesson studios. In addition to operating Village Guitar Studio, he is also a guitar teacher at the Cappelli Institute of Music in Oak Park, IL.

Roger has performed professionally for over 15 years. He currently leads his own trio and freelances in the Chicago area. Though a jazz guitarist primarily, he has experience performing many styles of music. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston with a Bachelor's degree in Guitar Performance.
