Based in southwestern Pennsylvania, our company started in 1982 as a band instrument repair shop and in 1984 began renting instruments. Services continued to expand, and in 1989 the Penn Hills store opened and became the first full-service music center in the community. Convinced of the value of a community-based concept to its mission, the Gibsonia store was added in 1995. Our new South Hills store, based in the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center in Bridgeville, had its grand opening in February 2006.Today, we provide a huge variety of personalized services and accessories for individuals and schools in the Pittsburgh area, including sales and rentals of band instruments.

We provide instrument repair and maintenance for brass, woodwinds, orchestral strings and percussion for individuals and schools. As an organization managed and staffed by musicians, we're acutely aware of the difference that a well-set up and maintained instrument can make especially to a beginner! Our shop is staffed by fully-trained repair technicians who not only repair instruments but play them as well, so you can be certain that each and every instrument is play-tested upon completion. We have been using Johnstonbaughs for three years and we have never had a negative experience. My daughter has lessons with a very experienced cello instructor and my son with a violin instructor that also teaches at a local school. They are incredibly knowledgeable and I feel as though my money is well spent on their lessons. Nicholas manages the store very well, it’s clean and well organized, and all the instruments are well taken care of.
The front desk staff is always very kind and professional. We’ve had a few issues where a bridge or a string may have snapped, and they never make me feel badly for that happening. (Thank goodness for insurance!) We wouldn’t go anywhere else!
