Finding the Right Fit
While you are researching the best piano instructor for your child or yourself, please read about the benefits of enrolling at MEA Piano Studio. MEA Piano Studio is one of the only independent piano studios in Alexandria with a full-time instructor. Brand new, complete beginners are welcome. Parents don't need a musical background only a commitment to lessons and regular practice. (That's the only way piano lessons can be successful!).
Students as young as four can begin lessons, though sometimes students as young as 3.5 are accepted. Lessons for younger students are kept very short. Fifteen minutes for four year old students and five to fifteen minutes for those that are younger. Students that are six to nine years old begin with thirty minute lessons while students that are nine through twelve begin with forty-five minute lessons. Students older than twelve, including adults, begin with sixty minute lessons.
The studio is located near the Springfield Mall in a professional office location. There is no need to travel to someone's house and there is plenty of parking. A waiting area is available for siblings and parents.
Lessons are fun and stress-free. Students are not forced to play in competitions but are encouraged to participate in several non-competitive performances throughout the year. Some are private. Some give trophies. And all give encouragement and feedback to the student.

Schedule a free trial lesson at the Franconia location. It's important that the parent, student, and teacher all feel comfortable together. There is very much a team aspect to successful piano lessons and creating a good match at the beginning is essential.
Listen to original compositions created by current students. Students of all ages came up with these compositions on their own, some because I asked. And others, just did so on their own. Composing music is a natural part of a student's progression if they are practicing adequately. Why? Well, because students get bored practicing the same thing all the time, so they start to experiment with different sounds, and that leads to composing.

Michelle was an excellent piano teacher with a very professional studio. We experienced Michelle to be very polite and reserved (quiet) when teaching our child for a little over a year. I believe the negative review below is a fake review, as people in the NoVa area often misuse Yelp to write fake reviews (opposite to our experience in other parts of the country). I would recommend Michelle as a piano teacher for children.

We had a terrific experience with Michelle Ayler. Michelle taught both of our kids piano for a number of years. We were referred to her by someone who said that she is good with kids with special needs, as our son had some social skills issues. As it turned out, her low-key no pressure approach really worked for us and was a big improvement over the prior teacher we had tried who was focused on pushing and correcting the kids to the point that they threatened to quit.
While our son only played for a few years, our daughter continued on with Michelle for approximately 10 years and became a very accomplished pianist and knowledgeable about music theory and improvisation. Although Michelle comes off initially as quiet and introverted, both of our kids really thrived with her subdued-yet-playful student-led approach, which made it possible for our daughter to set her own goals and keep going with piano even when she had many other higher pressure activities going on. Michelle was also always easy to work with for us as parents.
She gave lessons in our home, and scheduling and payment (via Paypal!) were easy, with clear policies set at the beginning of each school year and no-questions-asked rescheduling and make-up lessons. Michelle facilitated our daughter's participating in piano festivals and organized a very nice annual recital that is unpretentious and all about the kids.
She also wrote a really terrific and well-written recommendation for our daughter that we appreciated. If you are looking for a piano teacher who is all about helping students develop their talents and not about impressing parents with small talk, Michelle is a great option for you.

I checked out the website and the music teacher here sounds very qualified. I see that she offers 30, 45, and 1 hour lessons. Since I'm a beginner, I signed up for a trial lesson for 30 minutes. The music teacher emailed me and notified me that for adults she ONLY offers 60 minute lessons. I said I wasn't interested in 1-hour lessons since that's too long a lesson for a beginner and asked why I can't have a shorter lesson to start with.
She said that "1 hour lessons work best for adults" and asked if I want to cancel my appointment. I said if you can't be flexible then I'll go ahead and cancel. I tried several times to talk to her by phone and left 3 messages but she never returned my calls. She sounds well qualified, but who wants to pay for private lessons with someone who's so stubborn, inflexible, and doesn't bother to return messages? I can find another piano teacher.
