JLA Music is a comprehensive music services company that provides guitar & piano lessons, live special occasion music, music theory, ear training, composition & arranging lessons, music engraving, music transcription, recording, and other services. JLA Music has been in business for more than 35 years. JLA Music has given hundreds of music performances, taught more than 24,000 individual lessons and 160 sections of classes, and provided many other services. Jeff Anvinson, the owner of JLA Music, has broad experience in music as an educator, performer, arranger, composer, conductor, music engraver, music transcriber, writer and music critic, audio and video recording engineer and producer, and more. He studied orchestration with Pulitzer-prize-winning composer Dominic Argento and performed in a master class led by multi-Grammy-Award-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin.
He has taught at universities, public schools, community education programs, commercial music stores, private practice, and the internet. His recordings can be purchased at iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby. He creates and publishes instructional videos on two YouTube channels: jlamusic and musicmannd1. He has created hundreds of arrangements and many compositions for a wide range of instrumental combinations, including chamber orchestra, wind ensemble, duos, trios, solos, and others.
After study at three universities, he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in music. He has published more than twenty articles in several periodicals and performed numerous times in the US, China, and Canada. He distributes and promotes the guitar compositions of Brazilian composer Ernst Mahle.

We specialize in doing recording projects for soloists and small groups. While we can record and multi-track virtually any instrument or voice to make a complete recording, we can augment a recording by using specially-composed, arranged, and synthesized parts to fill out the recording.

Jeff played and sang two songs for our 40th wedding anniversary party. He had never previously performed the two songs that I chose. But, with less than a week to prepare, he did a stellar performance that had most everyone teary-eyed with happiness. My wife said Jeff's music was the best part of our celebration! I took a few months of lessons with Jeff, and got exactly what I wanted out of them. He is very student-oriented, and will teach you what you want to know. I considered myself a beginner looking to transition to the intermediate level, and so Jeff was able to accommodate my request to learn more about music theory/chord progressions/etc than just rote memorization of songs. I'm confident that he would be a competent instructor for students of younger ages as well.

Jeff has instructed me in classical guitar for three years. He has instructed my son for two years in piano. I can safely say Jeff is one of the most knowledgeable music instructors in Grand Forks and North Dakota. His expertise as a guitarist and pianist is impressive. I recommend him as a guitar or piano teacher for very young children to older adults (like me).

Jeff had the task of trying to teach me when I was in my young teenage years and when doing anything my mom wanted me to do was pure torture. Even with his best efforts and my moms nagging encouragement, I didn't practice nearly as much as I should have. That doesn't mean Jeff didn't teach me a great deal.
