My music program is for students aged 6 and up. For young students, we start with rhythm and movement exercises, songs, and games, and gradually incorporate the piano or ukulele. Guitar students don't usually start until age 9 or 10, when their hands are big enough and strong enough to play. Students learn music by heart, starting with familiar songs, and also start learning to read music in the early stages.
Some older students prefer playing only by ear and I'm happy to accommodate that, but in most cases we eventually incorporate music reading when the student is ready for it. I enjoy discovering new music and music artists through my students and I often arrange songs at their request for no extra fee.
Learning to play an instrument is a serious commitment. I expect my students to practice 5-7 days a week and to be prepared for their lessons. Practice time for beginning students is 10-15 minutes, and this time slowly increases to 30-45 minutes each day.
I host recitals in the spring and fall each year. This is an opportunity for student musicians to perform in a supportive, encouraging setting, and an important goal which can help make practice more meaningful.
