CSMA is a dynamic meeting place for artists, community members and educators to explore ideas, artistic expression and creativity together. Our passion is to make outstanding arts education accessible to students of all ages, skill levels and socioeconomic backgrounds. The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides year-round, multi-arts instruction to adults and children, and presents performances and public events in its downtown Ithaca facility.
Jennifer Gibson is an artist who works in watercolor, gouache and oils. She studied fine arts at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA. Now she illustrates, does studio paintings as well as plein air, and teaches adults in upstate NY. Her work is available to see online. Ryan Abb is a graphic novelist and collagist with a gift for finding humor, simplifying complicated subjects, creative combination, and establishing a rapport with students. His current dream is to capture imaginations with a sci-fi cartoon starring a clumsy kid from Indonesia who gets caught up in a team of aliens.
CSMA offers a wide range of courses for all ages, from learning a new instrument to being part of an ensemble. Seth Carrithers has been an active musician and music educator for over 25 years. As a double bassist working in various jazz ensembles, Seth has had the pleasure of performing with many wonderful musicians, including some internationally recognized recording artists.
Research suggests that playing an instrument or singing in a choir can enhance emotional well-being, brain health, cognition, and hearing. At CSMA, experienced music teachers and performers offer lessons for all skill levels. They teach with patience and encouragement and provide practice strategies letting you develop musical skills at your own pace.
