The seeds of Music Focus (nee Music West) began in the mid 60's at a place in Manhattan Beach called "Gene Leis Guitars". Gene Leis was a jazz guitarist quite fond of the Brazilian and Latin and Jazz sounds. Gene was a great man and a certified legend in the South Bay. His "Django" license plate still evokes his memory.
Well, about 20 different teachers taught for Gene during the 'hey day' of that little store front business on Sepulveda Blvd. It was across the street from Lucky's, and the car wash (there used to be a hamburger place there called "Clancey's".).

These various areas that you can browse will give you a glimpse into the depth of our commitment to private instruction. Music Focus has taken great pride in the teaching and gathering of information about music and specifically guitar and bass music; however, it is and always will be the people to whom that care is given that gets the most attention and respect from our staff.
Guitarist/composer Karl Grossman is available for session work, as producer and arranger, or as a composer. He takes influence from several styles and diciplines in his approach to musical arts. Playing music since early years starting on trumpet, Karl continues to push the envelope on repetoire and improvisational technique with his guitar.
