Founded in 1976, Calliope is a nonprofit educational and presenting organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of traditional and contemporary folk music and its allied arts. We firmly believe that music is a language through which we speak, learn, create, and come to know our world, engaging individuals of all backgrounds.
Calliope's flagship concert series at Kelly Strayhorn Theater, presenting masters and rising stars of the folk world. Our occasional series of concerts in the unique and intimate club-like atmosphere of the Roots Cellar at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Offering instruction in heritage-based music through small-group classes, workshops, and jam sessions on the Chatham University campus.
For much of its history, Calliope was the singular presenter of roots music in Pittsburgh. Calliope has had outsized success in bringing big-name performers (many of them well before they even had big names) since our 1976 start to our venues. We're proud to count the following among the many brilliant musicians who have entertained Calliope fans over the years.
The house was built in 1876 by a local contractor named Fraser. He built it for himself and his young wife. She died six months after they moved in of "consumption". He lived with a male servant in the house until his death in 1899. The observation tower used to be elevated to another story, but it was abbreviated when lightning struck it some time ago.

I love Calliope concerts. Through listening to bands I never heard of (Martha Redbone Roots Project, de Temps Antan, Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem) I have fallen in love over and over again with new music and genres. I know at Calliope concerts that I am hearing the best of the best. Some concerts get other promoters lurking after the show, and then the same bands show up the next year at other venues. Calliope gets 'em first.
