My father, Everett James, and his brother Mel James opened James Music Studio at 518 S. Main St. in Santa Ana, CA in 1946, then moved to the location pictured above in 1950. Consequently, I started playing music at a young age and have stayed active my whole life. After my son's first piano teacher moved to another state, we tried others, but he was only discouraged. We are so happy we found Mark, he has brought back my son's desire to learn.

I can't imagine a more positive introduction to piano than that which Mark James gave my daughter. Mark taught her music theory along with a wide variety of musical genres letting my daughter's interests guide what she studied. A small electric keyboard works well for small children. Be sure to get a keyboard stand, sustain pedal and portable bench.
A 30-minute weekly lesson is ample for most beginners, providing enough material for a 30-minute daily practice between lessons. The method course I developed covers all styles of guitar: fingerstyle, plectrum (with a pick), solo, lead, rhythm, improvisation, and more. Music theory will be taught along the way.
This course covers harmony and voice leading in both the common-practice and popular genres. Either one can be emphasized based on your interests. The goal is to provide you with the understanding needed to analyze, arrange and write music. My music theory lessons and music composition lessons can be tailored for beginners and professional musicians.

Mark is a great teacher! I have learned so much about music and the guitar from him over the last 6 months. He has a college degree in music education so he knows how to teach at the appropriate level. During my lesson - he will record himself playing my guitar practice pieces - so that I am able to go home and practice my lessons correctly with his recording of the practice pieces. I would recommend him without reservation - best instruction I've ever had!
